The Cabinet has approved Local Council (LC I, LC II) and Women’s Councils elections for March-April, aligning them with the general election timeline to eliminate mid-term polls.

On February 23, Local Government Minister Raphael Magyezi and the Electoral Commission briefed Cabinet on the Shs56.9 billion plan, confirming the polls will wrap up before President Museveni’s May swearing-in.

Information Minister Chris Baryomunsi told journalists at Uganda Media Centre on February 24, 2026 that repeated tenure extensions since July 2023 aimed to sync all elections, from presidential and parliamentary down to LCs avoiding fragmented cycles.

“This harmonisation ensures we do all elections at once, starting from the top,” Baryomunsi said, noting the Electoral Commission will soon announce exact dates.

Magyezi added the process, held by lining up, will spill into early March but will end before the new president’s inauguration.
