Ntungamo District Local Government has launched maintenance works on the 7.9-kilometre Nyamunukaโ€“Rwetanzi road, a project aimed at improving transportation, access to markets, and essential services for communities along the route.

The Shs80.2 million project covers the road linking Nyamunuka Town Council through Bwongyera and Rwetanzi towards Mitooma District. The road has been in poor condition for years, affecting the movement of agricultural produce and access to schools, health facilities, and other services. The works are expected to be completed within three weeks under the districtโ€™s road maintenance programme.

According to Acting District Engineer Charles Kusemererwa, the project will include bush clearing, grading, road formation, filling eroded sections, installation of culverts, and opening drainage channels. He noted that the district is strengthening road maintenance efforts following an increase in road funding, with an additional Shs1 billion bringing the total allocation to about Shs2 billion for road works across the district.

District Roads Engineer Moses Twiine urged residents to safeguard the infrastructure by keeping drainage channels clear and avoiding activities that block water flow, warning that poor drainage can damage newly maintained roads.

Local leaders welcomed the project and called for effective supervision to ensure quality work and value for money. Nyamunuka Town Council Mayor Yasin Katafa Byamukama said the deteriorated road has hindered the transportation of agricultural produce, while Councillor Immaculate Asiimwe appealed for additional culverts and maintenance of bridges, including the installation of guardrails at Nyamunuka Bridge to enhance safety.

Acting Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Gerald Niwagaba encouraged residents to use the improved road to support agriculture and other income-generating activities through government programmes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga.

Ntungamo District LC5 Chairperson Samuel Muchunguzi Rwakigoba emphasized accountability and quality workmanship, urging residents to monitor the project and report any concerns. He also pledged to work with the area Member of Parliament to advocate for improved electricity and water services in the area.

Ntungamo District maintains approximately 673 kilometres of roads and has prioritised 20 roads for maintenance during the 2026/27 financial year. As the rainy season approaches, district authorities have also called on residents to clear blocked drainage channels to protect the road network and ensure smooth water flow.
