Residents of Nyabuhikye Sub-county in Ibanda District are eagerly anticipating the completion of Bwahwa Seed Secondary School, a government-funded project expected to improve access to education and boost local socio-economic development.
Constructed under the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers (UgIFT) Programme at a cost of Shs3.3 billion, the school is now 97 percent complete and is expected to be handed over to the community by the end of June.
Community members say the school will reduce long travel distances for learners while creating employment opportunities and expanding markets for local agricultural produce.
During a recent monitoring visit, Ibanda District Chairperson Happy Herbert Mayanja said residents view the project as a catalyst for social and economic transformation.
“The community believes this school will improve livelihoods through education, jobs, and increased business opportunities,” he noted.
Project Manager Ben Kitandwe confirmed that construction remains on schedule, with major works at 97 percent completion and external works at 95 percent. The project is expected to be completed by June 30 ahead of commissioning.
Ibanda Resident District Commissioner Godfrey Mbetegyereize praised the quality and pace of work, urging the contractor to maintain momentum to ensure timely completion.
Bwahwa Seed Secondary School is among several seed schools being developed in Ibanda District under the government’s Seed School Programme, launched in the 2018/2019 financial year through the UgIFT initiative in partnership with the World Bank. The programme aims to expand access to affordable secondary education in underserved communities.
For the people of Nyabuhikye, the new school represents more than just infrastructure—it is a long-awaited investment in education, employment, and community development.
