Dei BioPharmaโs cassava processing plant in Namasagali, Kamuli District, is nearing full-scale production after Energy Minister Dr Monica Musenero directed UEDCL to resolve power shortages that had stalled operations.
UEDCL installed a dedicated transformer, with two transformers now providing a combined capacity of about 7.5 megawatts. Managing Director Dr Matthias Magoola said savings on fuel would now support cassava purchases, potentially raising prices for farmers from Shs300 to Shs700 per kilogramme.
The plant supplies pharmaceutical-grade starch and industrial sugars to Dei BioPharmaโs Matugga factory for manufacturing medicines and vaccines. Officials say the project could boost local pharmaceutical production, reduce import costs and increase incomes for cassava farmers across Busoga, Teso and Lango.
