Kamwenge District has vaccinated 8,560 livestock against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), falling short of its target of 210,000 animals.
District Veterinary Officer Dr Paul Mbago said the district received 55,440 vaccine doses in July and August, adding that the Ministry of Agriculture is willing to provide more if supplies run out before the target is reached.
Farmers pay Shs8,000 to vaccinate a cow or pig and Shs5,000 for a sheep or goat. The district has also received vaccines against Lumpy Skin Disease and rabies, with 1,800 and 400 doses administered respectively.
District Secretary for Works, Production and Technical Services Yonani Muhwezi urged farmers to vaccinate their animals to prevent diseases and protect their livelihoods.
