The Government of Uganda, through the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), has launched the Shs694 billion Wakiso West Water and Sanitation Project to provide reliable clean water to more than one million people in Kyengera, Nsangi, Kajjansi, Wakiso and Mpigi, among other areas.
The project will draw water from Lake Victoria at Bwerenga, addressing persistent water shortages caused by rapid population growth and limited supply in Kampala’s western suburbs. It will include a treatment plant producing 62.5 million litres daily, 172.7 kilometres of water transmission and secondary pipes, five reservoirs and 941 community water dispensers to improve access for underserved communities.
NWSC Managing Director Dr Silver Mugisha said the project will ensure uninterrupted access to safe drinking water while making supplies more accessible and affordable, particularly in informal settlements.
The initiative also includes a faecal sludge treatment plant in Kajjansi to improve sanitation and reduce environmental contamination, alongside solar power installations at selected sites.
NWSC has signed a consultancy contract worth approximately Shs47.5 billion with a joint venture led by Denmark’s NIRAS A/S and Germany’s Fichtner GmbH & Co. KG, supported by Ugandan firms M&E Associates Ltd and Alliance Consultants Ltd, to design the project and supervise construction.
