A fresh chapter has begun in Ugandaโs urban transport story as E-Bus Xpress (EBX) officially rolls out operations across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area. Powered by locally built electric buses from Kiira Motors Corporation, the launch signals a bold shift toward modern, sustainable mobility.
For years, Kampalaโs transport system has struggled under the weight of heavy congestion, aging diesel minibuses, unregulated boda-bodas, and rising air pollution. The impact has been significantโcosting the country hundreds of millions of dollars annually while commuters lose valuable hours each day stuck in traffic.
EBX introduces a cleaner, quieter, and more dependable alternative. These zero-emission buses, proudly made in Uganda, are designed to ease congestion while improving the overall commuting experience. The first routes will connect key high-traffic areas including City Square, Nakawa, Ntinda, Bukoto, Kamwokya, and Wandegeyaโcorridors long known for gridlock and pollution.
With affordable fares and convenient cashless payments via mobile money, the service aims to gradually transform how residents move around the city, reducing reliance on overcrowded and polluting transport options.
While challenges such as infrastructure improvements and dedicated bus lanes remain, the launch reflects a strong commitment to innovation and sustainability. For many Kampala residents, the arrival of these sleek, home-grown electric buses is more than just a new serviceโitโs a hopeful glimpse into a smarter, cleaner urban future.
