The government has commenced construction of a Shs9.7 billion tourism complex at the Kikorongo Equator Monument in Kasese District to enhance visitor experience, strengthen tourism infrastructure and create jobs for surrounding communities.

The project, implemented by Kwed Construction Limited under the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities with support from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), will feature an Information and Interpretation Centre, two thematic museums, a modern restaurant and rest area, and a viewing deck overlooking the Rwenzori landscape and wildlife corridor.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Tourism Minister Tom Butime said the development is part of the government’s strategy to increase tourist arrivals, encourage longer stays and boost local economies through tourism. He said the project will improve visitor experiences while creating employment and supporting local businesses.

Commissioner for Museums and Monuments Jackline Nyirakiiza said the complex will transform the Equator Monument into a world-class attraction while preserving its historical, educational and cultural significance.

UWA Executive Director James Musinguzi noted that the investment comes as tourism continues to recover strongly, citing about 106,000 visitors to Queen Elizabeth National Park, underscoring the need for improved tourism infrastructure.

Butime urged the contractor to complete the project within the 18-month contract period, saying the upgraded facility will strengthen Kasese’s position as a leading tourism destination while stimulating investment, cultural enterprises and local trade.
