A joint operation between the Uganda Peoplesโ Defence Forces (UPDF) and South Sudanese military authorities has successfully facilitated the return of 13 Ugandans from South Sudan, highlighting growing regional cooperation on security and humanitarian matters.
The group, comprising 11 adults and two children, was repatriated through coordination between UPDF Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security Maj. Gen. Richard Otto and his South Sudanese counterpart. Upon arrival, they were received by Resident City Commissioner Ambrose Onario on behalf of the State Minister for Northern Uganda.
Welcoming the returnees, Onario emphasized reconciliation, healing, and reintegration, encouraging them to embrace new opportunities and rebuild their lives. He also commended all stakeholders involved in the repatriation process.
The returnees were later handed over to Terra Renaissance, a rehabilitation and reintegration organisation led by Japanese national Shingo. The organisation will provide programmes focused on mindset transformation, vocational training, and life-skills development to support sustainable livelihoods.
They are also expected to benefit from government empowerment initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga.
Prime Minister of Ker Kwaro Acholi Martin Okumu praised the UPDF for ensuring the safe return of the Ugandans and urged communities across Northern Uganda to welcome them without stigma. He described the returnees as valued members of the community deserving support and acceptance.
Religious leaders also welcomed the initiative. Sheikh Musa Kalimu, Assistant Mufti of the Acholi Sub-region, commended the repatriation effort and acknowledged President Yoweri Museveniโs contribution to peace initiatives that have enabled peaceful returns during and after the Lordโs Resistance Army insurgency.
Security agencies used the occasion to warn Ugandans against fraudulent individuals and groups that lure people with false promises of jobs or financial opportunities, noting that such schemes have previously exposed citizens to exploitation and armed conflicts abroad.
Officials say the successful repatriation reflects strong UgandaโSouth Sudan cooperation in security, intelligence-sharing, and humanitarian affairs, while underscoring the importance of rehabilitation and community support in helping returnees rebuild their lives.
