Construction of the African Union (AU) Humanitarian Agency headquarters will soon begin in Lubowa after Uganda won the bid to host the continental institution.

ICT and National Guidance Minister Justine Kasule Lumumba said Uganda emerged as the preferred host following a rigorous AU assessment. The agency will coordinate Africaโ€™s response to conflicts, displacement, climate change, public health emergencies and natural disasters.

The headquarters is part of the AUโ€™s humanitarian agenda adopted in 2016 to strengthen Africaโ€™s humanitarian systems and promote lasting solutions to crises. Ugandaโ€™s successful bid is expected to enhance its international profile while attracting diplomats, humanitarian experts, researchers and investment.

Cabinet has approved a phased implementation, with government providing temporary office space in Rubaga as construction gets underway. The Lubowa headquarters is expected to be completed within two to three years.
