The Woman Member of Parliament for Kwania District, Hon. Kenny Auma Lapat, has officially launched the distribution of 48,861 hand hoes to households across the district under a government agricultural support programme aimed at strengthening household farming and improving agricultural productivity.
The flag-off ceremony took place on Thursday at the Plant and Health Store in Olami ‘B’ Cell, Ikwera Ward, Aduku Town Council. Following the launch, the hand hoes were dispatched to various sub-counties and town councils in preparation for distribution to beneficiary households.
According to district officials, Kwania North has been allocated 26,864 hoes, while Kwania County will receive 21,997 hoes.
The distribution breakdown includes 4,741 hoes for Abongomola Sub-county, 4,005 for Akali, 2,745 for Aduku Town Council, 7,117 for Aduku Sub-county, 5,628 for Inomo Sub-county, 2,628 for Inomo Town Council, 4,857 for Chawente Sub-county, 4,689 for Atongtidi Sub-county, 5,885 for Nambieso Sub-county, 4,184 for Ayabi Sub-county, and 2,382 for Ayabi Town Council.
Speaking during the event, Hon. Auma called on leaders and officials overseeing the exercise to ensure transparency and fairness throughout the distribution process. She emphasized that every household is entitled to one hand hoe based on data from the 2024 National Population and Housing Census.
“This is a government programme and every citizen should benefit regardless of political affiliation, clan or religion because all citizens are taxpayers,” she said.
The Kwania District Production and Marketing Officer, George Johnson Ojok Ocen, urged distribution teams to prioritize vulnerable households, particularly child-headed and women-headed families.
“Those who are relatively better off should allow the vulnerable groups, who may not be able to afford such tools, to benefit first,” Ojok Ocen noted.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Aturu Abraham, warned local leaders and sub-county officials against favoritism and any irregularities that could undermine the exercise. He cautioned against giving preference to relatives and friends at the expense of eligible beneficiaries.
The Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of Kwania District, Robert Okwanga Alem, clarified that only households recorded during the 2024 National Population and Housing Census will qualify for the programme.
“This programme is strictly for households that were enumerated during the 2024 census. Newly formed households will not be considered,” Okwanga explained.
On behalf of local leaders, the LC III Chairperson of Ayabi Town Council, John Denis Ebuu, pledged to work closely with Local Council leaders to mobilize residents and ensure the successful implementation of the programme.
The hand hoe distribution initiative is expected to enhance household farming activities, support agricultural production, and contribute to improved livelihoods across Kwania District.
