Efforts to restore order and strengthen conservation at Pian Upe Game Reserve have received a boost with the opening of a new Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) office in Nakapiripirit District.

Commissioned on Sunday by Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities Minister Tom Butime, the office is expected to strengthen field operations, improve law enforcement and enhance cooperation with communities around the reserve.

Pian Upe has long faced challenges such as encroachment, illegal hunting and livestock grazing. The situation intensified in 2025 when President Museveni allowed pastoralists to temporarily graze livestock inside the reserve while the government sought a lasting solution to conflicts between communities and conservation authorities.

The move attracted herders from the Pian and Pokot communities. UWA officials said the growing presence of livestock has affected wildlife and tourism, with some animals and tourists being pushed away from parts of the reserve.

UWA Executive Director Dr James Musinguzi said the new office will strengthen protection and management while improving engagement with stakeholders.

Minister Butime commended Karamoja leaders for supporting UWA and urged greater community involvement in conservation. He also called for increased sensitisation to discourage the killing of wild animals.

He said improved security in Karamoja has increased interest in tourism and created opportunities for investment. Nakapiripirit Resident District Commissioner Bessie Modesta Ajilong urged UWA staff to maintain the new facility and promote teamwork.

UWA said the office is part of broader efforts to restore effective management of Pian Upe, protect its biodiversity and promote tourism as an alternative livelihood for communities in Karamoja.
