The Government of Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting organized pineapple farmers in Nakasongola District as part of efforts to promote agro-industrialization, create jobs, and increase farmersโ incomes through value addition.
During a high-level visit to Kawundwe Village, the Minister of State for Industry, David Bahati, and the Minister of State for Finance (General Duties), Cissy Mulondo, met members of the Kikyusa Pineapple Farmers Cooperative Society Ltd, an organized farmer group cultivating more than 640 acres of pineapples and providing employment to nearly 2,000 Ugandans.
The ministers pledged comprehensive government support to help the cooperative transition from traditional pineapple cultivation to commercial agro-processing and value addition. The move is aimed at enabling farmers to earn more from their produce, reduce post-harvest losses, and access wider markets.
Government officials emphasized that organized farmer groups are better positioned to access financing, invest in processing facilities, and build sustainable agricultural enterprises. The support will focus on strengthening value addition, improving market access, and enhancing the overall profitability of pineapple farming in the district.
The initiative aligns with Ugandaโs broader strategy of promoting agro-industrialization by encouraging farmers to move beyond selling raw agricultural products and instead participate in processing and value-added production, creating more employment opportunities and contributing to economic growth.
