E-Bus Xpress (EBX) Kiira Ltd will deploy 15 electric buses on three routes connecting Kira Municipality to Kampala starting August 28, providing commuters with a cleaner and higher-capacity transport option.
The launch comes as government intensifies efforts to improve public transport and road safety through โOperation Ganyegenya,โ a nationwide crackdown on unsafe vehicles. The campaign targets taxis with mechanical defects and will expand from Kampala to Kira, Wakiso, Nansana and Mukono.
The electric buses will serve a rapidly growing urban population in Greater Kampala, where demand exceeds two million passenger journeys daily. Their introduction also supports efforts to reduce pollution and modernise public transport.
The expansion follows major road upgrades under the World Bank-supported Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme. Kira Municipality received nearly 30 kilometres of roads for rehabilitation, with key projects in Kira and Mukono reported to be 80โ90% complete by early 2026.
Government says the investment will enhance mobility, improve safety and support sustainable urban transport across the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
