The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) has handed over 150 power tillers to selected farmer groups across Uganda to accelerate agricultural mechanisation and improve productivity among smallholder farmers.
The walk-behind tractors, supplied with various implements, will help farmers reduce dependence on manual hoes, expand cultivated acreage and increase yields. According to State Minister for Agriculture Desire Muhooza, the machines are ideal for small and fragmented farms and can till up to two acres per day using just one litre of fuel under suitable conditions.
The equipment was allocated to farmer groups to promote shared benefits and proper management. Beneficiaries have been encouraged to establish maintenance funds, while MAAIF will train operators to ensure effective use and long-term sustainability.
Officials said the power tillers can also be used for harrowing, slashing, water pumping, feed grinding and spraying, making them valuable tools for modern farming.
The ministry noted that the 150 machines form part of a broader agricultural mechanisation programme aimed at transforming subsistence farming into commercial agriculture, with plans to procure additional units as funding allows.
