The Ministry of Health has officially commissioned Kakira Health Centre IV in Jinja District following a major infrastructure upgrade funded by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, bringing vital surgical, maternity and emergency healthcare services closer to residents of Butembe Constituency.
Previously operating as a Health Centre III, the facility was upgraded with modern infrastructure, including an operating theatre, maternity ward, outpatient department, medical stores, improved sanitation, a reliable water system, standby generator and medical waste incinerator. The project supports the government’s goal of establishing at least one fully functional Health Centre IV in every constituency.
Speaking at the commissioning, Commissioner for Maternal and Child Health Dr Charles Mugahi, representing Health Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi, said the government will equip and staff the facility to ensure quality healthcare services.
Health Centre IV Officer-in-Charge Anthony Tuliraba appealed for more specialised medical personnel to meet the area’s growing healthcare needs, while Jinja District Chairperson Moses Batwala pledged to work with the Ministry to deploy specialists.
Former Jinja District Woman MP Loy Katali, whose lobbying efforts helped secure the project, hailed the facility as a result of persistence and community-focused leadership.
The upgraded health centre is expected to reduce pressure on Jinja Regional Referral Hospital** and improve access to quality healthcare for residents of Jinja District and neighbouring communities.
