President Yoweri Museveni has reaffirmed Ugandaโ€™s commitment to fully preparing the infrastructure required to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

The assurance was given during a meeting at State House with a Confederation of African Football (CAF) delegation led by Secretary General Samson Adamu and Country Infrastructure Manager Bianca Wambui. The CAF technical team is currently assessing Ugandaโ€™s facilities ahead of the tournament scheduled for June 2027.

According to a statement by Deputy Presidential Press Secretary Faruk Kirunda, the CAF officials briefed the President on findings from inspections of proposed host stadiums, training grounds and supporting facilities. Ms Wambui commended the progress made so far, particularly on stadiums and training venues.

Responding to the preliminary report, President Museveni acknowledged that some logistical challenges remain but pledged government support to ensure Uganda meets CAF standards. Drawing on Ugandaโ€™s successful hosting of the 2024 Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit, which brought together representatives from nearly 150 countries, he expressed confidence in the countryโ€™s ability to deliver a successful tournament.

The President noted that while Kampala already has much of the required infrastructure, efforts will now focus on strengthening facilities in upcountry areas. He assured CAF that the government would address any outstanding requirements to ensure readiness for the continental showpiece.

During the meeting, CAF Secretary General Samson Adamu also proposed a joint single-visa arrangement among Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania to ease movement for fans, teams, media and officials during the tournament. President Museveni welcomed the proposal, revealing that discussions with Kenyan President William Ruto and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan were already underway.

In a related engagement, the President met the National AFCON Task Force led by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to review preparations involving various government ministries, departments and agencies. The meeting was also attended by State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang and FUFA President Moses Magogo.

The 2027 tournament, known as the โ€œPamoja Bid,โ€ will mark the first time Africaโ€™s premier football competition is jointly hosted by countries in the East African region.
