The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has launched a real-time air quality monitoring system in Kampala, marking a significant step in Ugandaโs efforts to combat air pollution and promote a healthier environment.
The system was unveiled on September 7, 2026, during celebrations to mark the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, a global observance dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of clean air and the need to reduce pollution.
According to NEMA, the newly installed equipment provides real-time air quality data within a six-kilometre radius of NEMA House in Kampala, enabling authorities and the public to access timely information on pollution levels and air conditions.
The initiative is expected to strengthen environmental monitoring, support evidence-based policy decisions, and enhance public awareness about the health and environmental impacts of air pollution. Real-time monitoring also allows authorities to identify pollution hotspots and take timely interventions to safeguard public health.
The launch comes as Kampala continues to expand its air quality management efforts through a growing network of monitoring stations that provide pollution data to guide environmental planning and mitigation measures.
By introducing the new monitoring system, NEMA has reinforced Ugandaโs commitment to improving air quality, protecting public health, and contributing to global efforts aimed at ensuring cleaner air and bluer skies for future generations.
