Uganda has strengthened its position in regional public health after the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) was designated the East African Community (EAC) Regional Centre of Excellence in Virology during its 90th anniversary celebrations in Entebbe.

The designation places UVRI at the forefront of regional efforts to detect, research and respond to viral diseases such as Ebola, Marburg and other emerging health threats, while boosting collaboration in disease surveillance, laboratory capacity and outbreak preparedness.

In a message delivered by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, President Yoweri Museveni praised UVRI for its outstanding contribution to public health and scientific research, urging Ugandan scientists to advance innovation with continued government support.

As part of the celebrations, UVRI unveiled a museum highlighting its 90 years of scientific achievements. Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr Diana Atwine called on researchers to continue providing practical solutions to emerging public health challenges.

The recognition further cements Uganda’s leadership in virology research and regional health security.
