Uganda Airlines has secured an early delivery schedule for eight Boeing aircraft, despite a global aircraft shortage that has left many airlines waiting more than a decade for new planes.
The order includes four Boeing 737-8 MAX and four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with deliveries expected in 2032 and 2033. The airline says the timeline will allow it to strengthen its route network, develop its workforce, expand infrastructure, and grow market demand before the aircraft arrive.
The deal is notable because Boeing currently has a backlog of more than 6,800 aircraft orders, making Uganda Airlines’ six-to-seven-year delivery timeline relatively favourable for a young carrier.
According to sources, the agreement is supported by the US government through financing and guarantees, with the US Export-Import Bank expected to provide up to $390 million toward the acquisition. Claims that the deal could involve broader US strategic interests, including potential drone operating rights in Kidepo, have not been independently verified.
Wake confirmed the airline is considering several financing options, including export credit-backed structures, finance leases, and operating leases. The Ugandan government has already allocated **$119 million** for pre-delivery payments.
The Boeing purchase is the airline’s first direct order from the US manufacturer and supports its ambition to expand beyond its current network of 17 destinations, including plans for future long-haul routes such as New York. In the meantime, the airline intends to lease additional aircraft from 2026 to support gradual network growth.
While analysts have cautioned against rapid expansion before achieving consistent profitability, citing Kenya Airways’ failed Project Mawingu strategy, Uganda Airlines says fleet growth will be guided by route performance and a clear business strategy.
Backed by continued government support and favourable financing, Uganda Airlines aims to build a profitable international network. The long-term success of the Boeing order will depend on whether the airline can turn its expanded fleet into sustainable commercial growth.
