The National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) has unveiled four improved Irish potato varietiesโ€”NAROPOT 7, 8, 9 and 10โ€”designed to boost yields, resist diseases and meet the needs of Ugandaโ€™s growing processing industry.

Developed for highland potato-growing areas such as Kigezi, the varieties offer higher productivity on limited farmland while reducing production costs through strong resistance to late blight and other diseases. NAROPOT 9 is the highest-yielding variety at 31.4 tonnes per hectare, while NAROPOT 10 stands out for its high dry matter content, making it ideal for industrial processing.

To improve access to quality seed, KAZARDI is establishing a potato seed hub expected to produce up to one million plantlets annually for distribution across major potato-growing regions. NARO is also working with private-sector partners to expand seed multiplication and strengthen links between research and extension services.

Farmers and seed producers have welcomed the new varieties, citing their drought tolerance, disease resistance, reduced need for chemical sprays and strong market potential. Some farmers have already reported better yields and secured supply contracts with processors such as Psalms Food Industries.

NARO says the long-term success of the varieties will depend on widespread adoption, increased seed availability and their contribution to improving farmer incomes while supporting Ugandaโ€™s expanding potato processing sector.
