Uganda is increasingly turning its attention from merely discovering mineral resources to maximizing their economic value, as experts call for stronger local capacity to drive growth in the mining sector.

Speaking at a policy roundtable focused on training, equipping, and nurturing local talent for the critical minerals industry, stakeholders emphasized that the country’s greatest challenge is no longer finding minerals but transforming them into jobs, investment opportunities, and sustainable revenue.

For years, discussions around Uganda’s mining sector have largely centered on exploration and resource discovery. However, government officials, industry players, and academic experts now argue that the next phase of development must focus on value addition, skills development, and institutional strengthening.

As demand for critical minerals continues to rise globally, participants stressed the need to build a skilled workforce and robust institutions capable of supporting processing, innovation, and responsible resource management.

The shift reflects a broader national ambition to ensure Uganda gains greater economic benefits from its mineral wealth. Experts noted that unlocking the sector’s full potential will depend on the country’s ability to develop local expertise, attract investment, and create a business environment that supports value creation across the mining value chain.

With government, industry, and academia working together to review and strengthen the sector, Uganda is positioning itself not only as a source of mineral resources but also as a competitive player in the global critical minerals market.
