The Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) will officially be inaugurated as the East African Community (EAC) Regional Centre of Excellence in Virology on July 22, 2026, marking a major milestone in strengthening regional preparedness for pandemics and other public health emergencies.

As the regional hub, UVRI will spearhead advanced virology research, laboratory training, disease surveillance, diagnostics and knowledge sharing, helping EAC partner states improve their capacity to prevent, detect and respond to outbreaks such as Ebola, Marburg and other emerging viral diseases.

Ahead of the launch, UVRI will host a scientific symposium bringing together researchers, policymakers, public health experts and development partners to discuss emerging infectious diseases, regional laboratory networks and strategies for stronger pandemic preparedness.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja is expected to officiate at the event alongside First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, EAC Deputy Secretary General Aguer Ariik Malueth, UVRI Director Prof. Pontiano Kaleebu and delegates from EAC partner states, Germany and international health organisations.

UVRI’s designation is part of Phase III of the EAC Regional Network of Reference Laboratories for Communicable Diseases Project, supported by Germany, which aims to strengthen regional laboratory systems through the One Health approach.

The launch also coincides with UVRI’s 90th anniversary, celebrating nine decades of excellence in virology research, disease surveillance and public health, while reinforcing East Africa’s commitment to stronger regional health security and collaboration.
