ICT and National Guidance Minister Justine Kasule Lumumba has launched an electronic waste (e-waste) management initiative, incorporating it into Ugandaโs National Cleaning Days to promote safe disposal, reuse and recycling of discarded electronic devices.
Speaking in Lira City on Saturday, Lumumba said the government, working with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), was developing measures to address growing e-waste as the country embraces digital technology. She urged Ugandans to protect their personal data before disposing of old phones, fridges, cables and other electronic equipment.
Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi, representing the Prime Minister, called on citizens to make cleanliness a daily habit and announced plans for a national cleanliness competition among Ugandaโs 10 cities. He also emphasized separating e-waste from other rubbish to support safe disposal and recycling.
Government Chief Whip and Lira City Woman MP Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero commended residents for maintaining a clean environment, while Lira City Mayor Sam Atul welcomed the initiative, noting the growing need for proper e-waste management.
The National Cleaning Day is observed on the last Saturday of every month to promote a cleaner environment and better public health.
