Uganda has taken a significant step forward in its preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 following the official commissioning and launch of construction works for two training venues in the western region.
The State Minister for Education and Sports, who also serves as the Local Organising Committee (LOC) Co-Chair, Peter Ogwang, presided over the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Booma Training Grounds in Hoima City and the Masindi Municipal Grounds in Masindi. The projects mark a major milestone in the country’s broader strategy to deliver world-class infrastructure ahead of the continental tournament.
Speaking at the events, Ogwang emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring Uganda is fully prepared to co-host AFCON 2027. He noted that the development of modern training facilities is not only essential for the tournament but will also leave a lasting legacy for sports development in the country.
“These facilities are part of a wider plan to upgrade our sports infrastructure to meet international standards,” Ogwang said. “AFCON 2027 presents a unique opportunity for Uganda to showcase its readiness and capability on the continental stage.”
The Booma Training Grounds in Hoima are expected to support teams that will be based in the oil-rich region, which has been earmarked as a key hub during the tournament. Meanwhile, the Masindi Municipal Grounds will serve as an additional training venue, helping to ease pressure on main stadiums and provide high-quality practice facilities for participating teams. 
Local leaders and residents welcomed the developments, highlighting the potential economic and social benefits. The projects are anticipated to create jobs, boost local businesses, and inspire young talent in the region.
Uganda is co-hosting AFCON 2027 alongside Kenya and Tanzania, marking the first time the tournament will be jointly hosted by three East African nations. As preparations intensify, the government continues to roll out infrastructure projects, including stadium upgrades, transport networks, and hospitality facilities.
The launch of construction works in Hoima and Masindi underscores Uganda’s determination to deliver a successful tournament while strengthening its sports ecosystem for future generations.
