The African Development Bank (AfDB) has reaffirmed its commitment to financing Ugandaโs 326-kilometre Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Malaba to Kampala, a key infrastructure project expected to boost regional trade and economic growth.
Speaking during the AfDB Annual Meetings in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, AfDB Vice President for Regional Development, Integration and Business Delivery, Dr. Abdul Kamara, assured Ugandaโs delegation that the railway aligns with the Bankโs priority of developing resilient infrastructure across Africa. The Bank has tentatively allocated UA 480 million (about USD 650 million) for the project, with final financing arrangements expected to be concluded after an appraisal mission in June 2026.
Dr. Kamara also pledged USD 1 million in emergency support to help Uganda strengthen its response to Ebola.
Ugandaโs delegation, led by Mustapha Achidri, Assistant Commissioner at the Ministry of Finance, welcomed the Bankโs support, noting that the government is mobilising EUR 2.7 billion for the SGR project under its Tenfold Growth Strategy. Achidri also thanked the AfDB for its continued partnership, highlighting recently approved rural electrification projects worth more than EUR 108 million.
The meeting further provided an opportunity for Uganda to congratulate newly elected AfDB President, Dr. Sidi Ould Tah, and pledge support for his leadership as the Bank advances Africaโs development agenda.
