A wave of optimism is sweeping through communities and businesses along BukotoโKisalosalo Road as ongoing rehabilitation works near completion, transforming what was once a nearly impassable route into a lifeline for the area.
The project, now about three-quarters complete, is being undertaken by the Uganda Peopleโs Defence Forces (UPDF) Engineering Brigade under the directive of Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Supervised by Lt Col Eng. Robert Chabo, the works have already begun to restore accessibility, boost business activity, and improve living conditions.
For years, the roadโs poor conditionโwith deep potholes, heavy dust, and persistent floodingโhad crippled movement and driven customers away. Local businesses struggled to survive as access became increasingly difficult, with some owners considering closure or relocation.
Today, the story is changing. Improved road access has brought customers back, reduced transport challenges, and lowered operational costs for businesses that previously had to improvise to stay afloat. Traders say the steady progress has renewed confidence and revived economic activity along the corridor.
Residents are equally relieved. The rehabilitation has not only addressed the road surface but also tackled long-standing drainage issues that caused frequent flooding during heavy rains. Newly improved drainage channels are already preventing water from spilling into homes and shops, offering a sense of security that had long been missing.
According to project engineers, the works have focused on widening the road, fixing drainage systems, and eliminating dangerous bottlenecks that once forced pedestrians and vehicles to compete for limited space. The road is being upgraded in phases, connecting key sections and easing traffic flow toward the Northern Bypass.
Community cooperation has played a crucial role in the projectโs success, with residents allowing access and supporting expansion efforts despite temporary inconveniences.
The UPDF Engineering Brigade has also highlighted its growing capacity to deliver major infrastructure projects, pointing to this initiative as another milestone in its expanding portfolio.
As completion draws closer, the BukotoโKisalosalo Road is emerging as more than just a transport upgradeโit is a symbol of recovery, resilience, and renewed economic opportunity for the surrounding communities.
