The Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) has officially introduced its first-ever dedicated train service for students, marking a significant step toward safer and more reliable school transportation.
The maiden journey successfully transported students from Mukono to Kampala, offering a practical alternative to the city’s often congested road network. The new service is designed to ease daily commuting challenges by providing a safer, more affordable, and dependable travel option for both learners and their parents.
With road traffic in and around Kampala continuing to pose risks and delays, the student train presents a timely solution. By shifting part of the daily school commute to rail, URC aims to reduce congestion while enhancing safety standards for young passengers.
URC has indicated that this initiative is only the beginning. Plans are already underway to extend the service to eastern and western routes as ongoing railway rehabilitation works are completed. The expansion is expected to widen access and further strengthen the role of rail transport in Uganda’s public mobility system.
Officials say the move reflects a broader national commitment to prioritising student safety while modernising transport infrastructure. As the programme grows, the student train service could become a cornerstone of a more efficient, inclusive, and secure transport network across the country.
